Mechanical Engineer Saffron Walden

Mechanical Engineer Saffron Walden. Our client, based near Saffron Walden, Essex is a successful, family owned business providing innovative chemistry equipment for chemical research. Supplying UK and International customers via a network of distributors. This is an exciting time to join the team as they pride themselves on offering their customer first class customer service.

The role:
This exciting and diverse role involves developing a range of innovative chemistry equipment. You will be working in the Technical & R&D team to help develop, launch, and support innovative new products. In particular, the Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the following:

  • The design of products at component and system level and creating innovative solutions to meet customer requirements, including:
  • Prototypes, components, assemblies, jigs, product finish, material identification, manufacturing processes, etc.
  • Identification, evaluation and integration of electronic components, including power supplies, PCB’s, motors, fittings, connectors, sensors, firmware, etc.
  • Using 3D SolidWorks software
  • Managing drawings within PDM system
  • Managing and delivering individual projects, including:
  • Sourcing (materials, suppliers, sub-contractors)
  • Testing (establishing test protocols, collecting and analysing results, reporting)
  • Consultation (working with colleagues, consultants, and partners)
  • Planning and costing (project plans, timelines, resourcing, budgeting, KPIs)
  • Reporting (presenting updates and progress reports)
  • Supporting the transition of R&D projects into product release and production, including documentation, marketing material, instructions, production packs, BOMs, checking procedures, FATs, QA, testing, etc.
  • Providing support to Technical Support, including:
  • Designs, drawings, schematics, and costings for custom quotations
  •  Technical and troubleshooting advice on existing and new products
  • Helping out other departments as and when required, including:
  • Marketing – creating drawings and models for marketing material
  • Production – designing jigs, continuous product and assembly improvement, troubleshooting

Qualifications:

  • A degree in mechanical engineering, industrial design, or similar
  • 5 years minimum working experience in an industrial or R&D environment with a track record of delivering projects on time and to budget
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials (e.g. machining, moulding, casting, sheet metal, coatings, etc.)
  • Excellent knowledge of 3D SolidWorks
  • Working knowledge of electronics (e.g. motors, PCBs, etc.)
  • Experience sourcing materials
  • Early-phase product manufacture and debugging experience
  • Fully IT literate with standard Microsoft Office packages (e.g. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Full driving license (no specialist license is required)

May have:

  • Working in the scientific instrument sector
  • Good understanding of communications protocols software and hardware is a definite plus
  • Working knowledge of software debugging and coding (e.g. C#, C++, Python) would be beneficial
  • Electrical engineering, electronics, electro-mechanical, software, or similar degree or experience
  • Knowledge of electronics circuit design and implementation within measurement & control devices e.g. PCB design, EMC design techniques & solutions, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) etc.
  • Chemistry and or chemical engineering background
